Ophthalmology is the investigation and treatment of disorders, diseases and injuries of the eye and/or its surrounding structures.
Our comprehensive medical and surgical Ophthalmology Service offers first class clinical care for dogs, cats and exotic animals with eye disease and, if requested, we can also accept equine patients in collaboration with Cambridge Equine Hospital.
We have a wealth of experience and access to advanced technology for diagnosing and treating a full range of ocular conditions. Our operating theatre is equipped with very sophisticated instrumentation allowing us to perform specialised surgery for conditions including eyelid abnormalities, corneal and conjunctival diseases, cataracts and glaucoma.
We offer screening of dogs for inherited eye disease under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme. Litter screening of puppies between 6 and 8 weeks of age is also offered under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme.
The combination of facilities, equipment and expertise allows us to provide the best possible care. This is enhanced further by the availability of Specialists in other related disciplines, allowing the multi-disciplinary approach taken to all patients in our care. This is particularly important for ophthalmology patients, as many eye conditions are associated with systemic disease.

Case Studies
Simba’s Story
Simba, a lovely tabby cat, came to see our Ophthalmology Service as an emergency as he had thorn embedded in his cornea which had to be removed surgically. The following day we performed microsurgery under an operating microscope to remove the thorn and repair Simba’s damaged cornea. Our anaesthesia team used a special technique to paralyse the eye to make surgery easier and safer. Simba went on to make excellent recovery following his surgery and his vision has been saved.

Our ophthalmologist Amy was brilliant and our surgeon (Tom) spoke to me on the phone as soon as he was out of theatre to explain how everything had gone. We’ve just finished a long course of antibiotics and eye drops and Simba was signed off today! He is very lucky to still have the sight in his left eye, it would’ve been so much worse had it not been for the quick actions of our normal vet and for your team. I attach some photos for you – he won’t go near anymore thorn bushes, that’s for sure!”
